Mighty Dog Toys Published 21 days ago Housetraining Adult and Senior Dogs Punishment is operationally defined as an event that lowers the probability of the behavior that it follows. It is not “punishment” in the common sense of the word,[40] and does not mean physical or psychological harm and most certainly does not mean abuse. Punishment simply involves the presentation of an undesired consequence (positive punishment) when the wrong behavior is performed, such as a snap of the leash, or the removal of a desired consequence (negative punishment) when the wrong behavior is performed, such as the trainer eating the cheese that would have been the reward.[41] A behavior that has previously been developed may cease if reinforcement stops; this is called extinction. A dog that paws its owner for attention will eventually stop if it no longer receives attention.[42]

View Behavior More in Obedience Return to Content Why choose crate training? Crate training uses a dog’s natural instincts as a den animal. A wild dog’s den is his home. It is a place to sleep, to hide from danger and to raise a family. The crate becomes an ideal spot to snooze or take refuge. Puppies prefer their own den where they can go to relax and get away from other dogs or people. Make it a happy place, reward your dog for choosing the crate and it’ll love it. Look here for inspiration on how to crate train your puppy the best way.

Those wanting to indoor potty train simply need to take away some of the potty pad tiles one by one as they notice where their puppy has started to go potty (perhaps after one or two weeks). Usually, the puppy will target the same area, so eventually, there can be only one pad acting as a legal indoor toilet.

Almost all dogs speak the language of food, so treats are also a good reward during the housetraining process. When your dog eliminates in the right spot outside, praise her with words and give her a treat within one to three seconds of the behavior. Remember that consistency is crucial, so make sure you have treats with you to reward her within three seconds every time she goes in the right spot.

COOKIES NOTICE If you choose to have your potty area in an unfenced yard, for your dog’s safety, he’ll need to be kept on a leash at all times unless he’s reliably trained to respond to obedience commands off leash (which he probably isn’t if he isn’t even housebroken yet!). Follow the same methods outlined above potty training a dog to use a fenced yard, but continue taking him out on the leash instead of eventually progressing to letting him go out in the yard alone. Since you won’t be able to let him run around off his leash in the yard as a reward for going potty, you’ll need to run and play with him on leash or take him out for a nice walk after he finishes up.

Don’t let the big words fool you – positive reinforcement is simply rewarding your dog for doing something you like, and ignoring the behaviors you consider “bad” or unwanted.
For the first week, your job is to make the pup’s new home a fun and happy place where desirable behavior is rewarded handsomely. This does not mean you have to put up with all manner of naughtiness. But, always be thinking about what you can add to the situation (more training sessions, a chew toy, a digging area, play time, a baby gate) to help your puppy succeed and make it hard for her to “fail.”
Eye contact is an important part of training. A new pup should be trained to bring their eyes up to yours. Pups should be comfortable looking at you and others eye to eye. The tendency is for the pup to glance and look away. Your goal is to have them look you in the eye and be comfortable with it. Verbal praise and petting should be part of this learning activity.
You can then base a schedule around these times, your puppy will learn to expect a toilet break at these times and house training becomes easier for both of you.

Another important part of training your puppy is teaching them to learn how to settle. As part of your family, it’s important for dogs to learn to relax, lie down, and have time on their own. It’s especially important for them to do this when you’re busy at home, with guests, making dinner, cleaning the house, or outside with friends at the pub or café. It’s hard for your dog to learn to be settled when there are distractions, lots of activity or opportunities for attention so it’s best to begin practising somewhere quiet.

  1. Barking, whining, and other forms of vocalization are natural for dogs, and especially for puppies. However, excessive barking is both annoying and inappropriate. Like toddlers, dogs vocalize to communicate a variety of messages. When addressing vocalization, consider first the likely reason, and then choose your response accordingly.

We believe in positive, motivational training methods, which have been tested to show great results. We use a reward-based training approach that makes the learning experience fun for the dog and will ensure that your dog will put its “best paw forward”, listening to and obeying your commands. We keep our classes fun for both dogs and owners while learning in a friendly, positive environment.
Your dog will pick up cues from the tone of your voice. If you’re saying things like “Good girl,” “That’s what I’m looking for,” “Nice job,” in a quiet, loving, calm tone immediately after she goes, you’re reinforcing that behavior.

  2. Training Equipment
Allow the dog to continue using the puppy pads while you establish a cue word that means it’s time for her to relieve herself, such as “Toilet” or “Get busy.” Once she is using the pad in response to a command, you can slowly move the pad, inch by inch, as the days go by, to a different location, while instructing her that this is where you want her to toilet with your command. Now, keep a pad on you and place it on the desired toilet spot outside. Give her cue words, and when she goes, make a huge fuss of her. Then scatter a small amount of soil or grass or whatever substrate is your choice onto the pad. Gradually remove the pad.

  3. What you want is a puppy that loves everybody, comes immediately when you call, chews only on dog toys, walks nicely beside you on leash at all times, goes potty outside, greets your guests politely, and sleeps quietly in her crate all night.
When the dog begins to go, quietly whisper a command you plan to eventually use to tell him to “go,” such as: go potty, get busy, do your business, etc.

To start training your dog to “settle,” leash her up and take a seat. Step on the leash so your dog has only enough room to sit, stand, and turn around, but not stray from your side. Then, wait. Your dog may be excited at first, and try to jump up on your lap or run around the room. Let her figure out that she can’t go anywhere. Once she settles down on her own, say “yes!” and give her a treat.

You cannot crate a puppy for this length of time, so you must have a back up plan. And that is to confine them to an exercise pen or a single small room with a papered area for them to potty.

She is VERY smart and picks up most ‘training’ fairly quickly, but she is also very rambunctious and likes to run and tear thru the house. She plays rough actually dragging the male by the ears across the floor until he has scabs all over his head. She used to bark a very high pitched irritating bark whenever we went out of sight until we tried a shock collar. It only took one time so now we just lay it close to her crate and it will beep if she barks or whines too loudly and she is quiet. She used to never go potty in her crate, but now she will and she acts like she prefers to go in the house even though we never punished her or made a big deal about it. If she does go outside she will pee and then take 15 minutes or so to finally get around to the other. We own a business, homeschool, and lead extremely BUSY lives so we really don’t have that much time to wait on her. I started putting her on an outside line when eating because we would take her out, feed and water them, and she would stop in the middle of eating to go in the house, then continue eating. But it has gotten SO hot lately (Alabama) that I hate to put her out in it.

  8. The best way is to put your puppy or dog on a schedule – a feeding schedule and a potty break schedule. Feed him at specific times, give him no longer than 10-15 minutes to eat, and then pick his food up and put it away until the next meal time. Free feeding, or leaving food out all the time for your dog to graze on will make house training difficult, and in my opinion, is not psychologically good for the dog. It also makes it hard to tell the vet exactly how much your dog is eating in the event he gets ill, and food that is left out tends to become stale and unappetizing. It may also attract bugs and mice.
