When I came home, there was a mess.” This is a common mistake among dog owners. They see some early signs that the dog is getting the idea, and declare victory too soon. Even when the puppy is consistently doing what you want, keep to the schedule to make sure the good habits are ingrained.

Supervise your dog during house training. When you first bring your dog or puppy home, plan to spend a lot of time watching your pet to make sure he doesn’t go to the bathroom indoors. This supervisory period is imperative because it enables you to teach the dog to quickly associate the urge to pee or poop with going outside. Intercepting the dog or puppy before he goes in the house is the best way to house train quickly.[5]
The crate should be just large enough for the dog to stand up, lie down and turn around. If the crate is too large, the dog may use one area as a bathroom and another area for sleeping.[13]

BOTHELL, WA – A video of a dog trainer hitting a dog with a plastic bat at a Bothell training school has caused outrage – but the school denies that it uses abusive techniques, and a Snohomish County animal services inspection cleared the school of wrongdoing.
For successful training, practice the following basic training steps with your puppy every day. Keep training sessions short. Your puppy will see everything as a game, so keep him stimulated by changing what he’s learning. Do each command for about five minutes and come back to it whenever you can.

Recommended Garfield To potty train a puppy, start by choosing a designated potty spot outside and take your puppy there every time it goes to the bathroom. Then, choose a command you want to use to train your puppy, like “go potty.” When you go to the designated potty spot, say your command and wait for your puppy to relieve itself, even if it takes a while. Once it does, praise it and give it a treat. Continue to do this every day and eventually your puppy will learn to wait until it’s outside before going to the bathroom!
Puppy Level 2 It is also important that the family is involved in the training. By having different people taking part in the socialization process, the puppy is continuously taken out of its comfort zone, letting the puppy know that he might experience something new regardless of who he’s with.

Main page Create Your Account No account yet? Register If you have a narrow side yard along your house, you can easily put a gate at one end to create a dog run. There are also freestanding chain-link dog runs that are great for people with unfenced yards or fenced yards where they do not want their landscaping to “go to the dogs.” Freestanding dog runs are available online or at building supply stores and fencing supply stores. A dog run is easier to puppy-proof and easier to keep clean – no more hunting all over the yard for poo. Also, your part of the yard stays clean and there’s no need to worry about escapes or destruction.
$9.86 Hi my puppy’s mollie is 12 weeks old and I’m at a loss as what to do. I take her to where I want her to go and she just lies down I tried this for over an hour and half and only when she’s off leash will she go. This involved me going back inside and back out when she’s giving cues she needs to go.

Bark Collars Sometimes, people allow their puppy to run free when outside, and sometimes people put their puppy outside and come straight back in themselves leaving their puppy outside alone making their puppy pine to come back in with their family. Both these things can make a puppy forget what they’re outside for. Make sure you’re not making either of these mistakes.
Dogs are pack animals by nature, and in every pack there must be an alpha. If you don’t step up and assume the alpha role, chances are that your puppy will, and this can lead to a whole host of problems. The truth is that your dog doesn’t want to be the pack leader — they’d rather you take charge and lead them confidently through the world  — so assert yourself from day one and your puppy will probably fall right in line.

This way you could confine him with acceptable chew toys, a water supply and with ample room to roam and play but with nothing inside the run he could possibly get into trouble with.

So it makes perfect sense to train your dog to use one specific area every time. An area away from any doors, windows, barbecues or play areas. But please don’t think if you choose a spot ‘out of the way’ you can shirk on cleaning duties.

  3. When it’s time for your dog’s morning potty break, grab some treats, put her on her leash and bring her to a specific spot each time. Give her about five minutes to do her business. That’s usually enough time for her to sniff around and decide to go. If you take her to her spot and she just looks at you as if she’s wondering why you’re standing there looking at her, it’s a good sign she’s not going to do her business this trip.

I really appreciate the time Donald took to explain and demonstrate techniques to gain control over situations. He also explained a little about why dogs act the way they do and how I should respond. Zoey has made so much progress. I would recommend to anyone who is having trouble with their dog.

The more you can stick to schedules and routines, the smoother and faster the process will be. But you can stray from the path when necessary and still find success, it will just take a little longer. Just don’t be overly strict and hard on yourself because we all have a life to live outside of house training!

  7. By eating at random times, they will need to poop at random times too.

Whatever the weather, puppies should be taken outside after they have woken up, or had something to drink or eat. Once out of the house, say a command such as ‘Go Now’ so they know it’s OK to relieve themselves. Praise them when they go, but ignore them when they fail. And if you do find a puddle inside, don’t tell your pup off as they may become frightened to go in front of you, instead if you catch them in the act tell them a firm “no” and take them to an appropriate place for them to go. Never, ever ‘rub their nose in it’.
To make the first step easier and less scary for your puppy, close the crate door most of the way, but keep your hand inside. Hold onto their toy or food puzzle while they play with it, and praise and talk to them in a comforting voice. Do this until your puppy is comfortable playing even when your hand is out of the crate.

  9. Whether you are working on teaching a simple command or dealing with an unwanted behavior, a positive attitude can make all the difference in how quickly your puppy learns. Rewarding your pet with yummy treats is a great way to reinforce desired behaviors, but never forget the value of verbal praise. Puppies enjoy pleasing their owners, but you must let them know when they succeed. A wholehearted “Good boy!” goes a long way.

A dog is not really fully house trained until he can comfortably wait several hours between wees, understands that the place to pee is always outside, and will try his best not to pee in the house if your are late home for some reason.
Wait. Your dog will try to get the treat — sniffing, licking, even pawing at your foot. Let her try. When she eventually gives up, immediately say “yes!” and give her a treat from your hand (not the one still under your shoe!)
