Doreen Tovey Supplies Aggression (when off leash) Literature & Language Club Nylabone Last Name Reward your puppy every time they eliminate outdoors. Praise or give treats—but remember to do so immediately after they’ve finished, not after they come back inside. This step is vital, because rewarding your dog for going outdoors is the only way to teach what’s expected of them. Before rewarding, be sure they’re finished. Puppies are easily distracted and if you praise too soon, they may forget to finish until they’re back in the house.
Eventually, work toward giving a tasty reward less frequently but with unexpected bonus treats—several at once, for example, for a particularly long “sit-stay.” Even young pups learn to appreciate the bonus concept of higher value rewards for better performance.

We have 2 Italian Greyhounds (12 weeks old). Instead of crate training, we have a closed in terrace that is their “crate area”. We have built them a large grass box for potty, but they don’t use it a lot. I’m home with them most of the time, so I am able to correct their mistakes, but night time or if we are out of the house, they don’t use it. What would be the best way to get them going in the correct spot at the times they aren’t being supervised?

Don’t punish your dog if they pee inside. Regardless of all those old training ideas punishment isn’t a good deterrent for house training. Yelling at your dog after the fact just confuses them and makes them nervous around you. If you catch your did in the act you can try to get their attention & move them outdoors. If you’re successful & they continue going once you get outside praise them like crazy.

Your puppy will gain socialization skills with other puppies and people, and we’ll introduce puppies in a positive way to everyday objects they may encounter. We’ll discuss housebreaking, crate training, safe toys, and ideas to keep the puppy busy. The class ends with the S.T.A.R. Puppy Test and the pet parent’s Responsible Puppy Pledge.

Search Puppy pads Your puppy needs to learn that people around him, particularly small children, can be a bit unpredictable. But he needs to accept that their unpredictable behavior is not threatening. You can help him do this by imitating a child’s behavior. Try stepping quickly towards his bowl — then drop in a treat. Gently bump into him, while he’s eating, or roll toys nearby — anything to cause a distraction, but drop a treat in the bowl to reward him for continuing to eat calmly. Do this every so often, but not at every meal. If your puppy freezes mid-mouthful, growls or glares at you, stop and try again another time. If this continues, it’s best to seek advice from a veterinary behaviorist or certified dog trainer.

     Dear Brother Christopher,
Repeat this version of the game for a few sessions, then add whatever cue you’d like, such as, “Go to bed,” or, “Go to your crate.” You can also start leaving the door shut for 20-30 seconds before giving her the treat and releasing her. Then start leaving the room and coming back to reward and release.

It’s nice for your dog to have a soft, comfortable surface in their crate. However, if your pup is inclined to chew (and possibly even eat!) their bedding — which many young puppies are — either look for a rug or pad that’s “puppy teeth resistant” or leave out bedding altogether until your pup outgrows their mouthy, destructive stage.

  7. If your puppy eliminates, praise him and have a treat ready to give him, but wait until he is finished so that you don’t interrupt him and cause him to have to finish later – inside. Give him a treat when he has finished – outside, not inside. Your dog needs to make the association between going outside and the treat that follows.

Non-associative learning is a change in a response to a stimulus that does not involve associating the presented stimulus with another stimulus or event such as reward or punishment.[46] Habituation is non-associative learning. An example is where a dog that reacts excitedly to a door bell is subjected to repeated ringing without accompanying visitors, and stops reacting to the meaningless stimuli. It becomes habituated to the noise.[47] On the other side of habituation is sensitization. Some dogs’ reactions to the stimuli become stronger instead of them habituating to the repeated stimuli or event.[48] Desensitization is the process of pairing positive experiences with an object, person, or situation that causes fear or anxiety.[49] Consistent exposure to the feared object in conjunction with rewards allows the animal to become less stressed, thereby becoming desensitized in the process. This type of training can be effective for dogs who are fearful of fireworks.[50]

If your dog does not have access to outside, you can train them to use newspaper or wee pads. Praise them with lots of affection when the newspaper is used and ignore them when it’s not. Be careful not to get in the habit of praising with food treats, because you run the risk of overfeeding. Puppies go to toilet around 12 times a day, and sometimes even more! If you want to retrain them to go outside at a later date then over time, move the newspapers towards the door and then out into the garden. Take a small piece of soiled paper outside, as the puppy recognises its own unique scent and will want to reinforce it.

  10. Dogs need routine to feel safe, especially puppies being thrust into a new, strange environment. Life can be unpredictable and full of chaos, everyone needs a little order to be happy and relaxed. A structured schedule allows a dog some predictability. The same goes for employees. Make plans and constantly communicate your expectations. Guidelines create a sense of direction and assurance. This doesn’t mean you can’t allow for change or the unexpected; just aim for enough structure to let your pets and your people do their best work. “Routine will set you free,” says Semel.

  13. Nipping precedes biting and it often begins as a way to set limits. A nip that is not corrected will escalate as the pup begins to think of himself as the leader of the pack. Corrections must be done instantly.
If you’re going to click, click as soon as the dog is finished. Clicking in the middle will usually interrupt the pup as he’s looking for his reinforcement! 🙂
The most important thing you can do to make house training happen as quickly as possible is to reward and praise your puppy every time he goes in the right place. The more times he is rewarded, the quicker he will learn. Therefore it’s important that you spend as much time as possible with your puppy and give him regular and frequent access to his toilet area.

For puppies, continue to follow the size guide of just big enough to stand, turn, and lie down in. Of course, this could get expensive, as you may have to get another, larger crate as your pup grows. Fortunately, there are crates that have removable and adjustable partitions, allowing the crate to “grow” with your puppy. Save yourself a chunk of change and opt for one of those!
