Don’t make the mistake of thinking that it doesn’t matter HOW you teach each of these routines. It definitely does matter. Not pushing your dog into seeing or doing things they show fear about, this will only make them feel worse.
What type of dog breed is right for your lifestyle? Pick a designated spot outside. Choose in your backyard, or if you don’t have one, near a green patch of grass somewhere. Take your dog back to the same place each and every time you go outside. Dogs are creatures of habit. You can help your dog feel comfortable and less anxious by picking a good spot for him to use as his “bathroom” each time he goes out. Use a verbal cue such as, “go potty” when you’ve reached the spot. He’ll learn to associate it with the place.[4]

BLOG Once he’s mastered this command, you’ll be able to gradually increase the distance. This is also true for the “Sit” command—the more solidly he learns it, the longer he can remain sitting. The key is to not expect too much, too soon. Training goals are achieved in increments, so you may need to slow down and focus on one thing at a time. To make sure the training “sticks,” sessions should be short and (mentally) sweet!

Teach your dog to come: This is the ideal time to teach your puppy to come to you. Young puppies want to be close to you, and the hardest part will be to get them to stay away from you so that you can call them to repeat this command again. If you have two people training the new puppy, have them call her name and “come”, and then when she runs to the new person she is given a treat. Just repeat this a few times, and if the puppy starts running to the second person even without being called start working on something else. Puppies figure this out really fast, so DO NOT give her a treat if she is running to the new person even without being called.

After a week, try the exercise while standing still. Make sure the puppy isn’t sleeping, eating, or concentrating on something incredibly interesting. Say “Name, come!” and show the squeaky toy or treat. When he arrives, throw a huge puppy-party with the treat or toy reward.

Restrict your dog’s access to the kitchen area. This lets you monitor his behavior, and correct accidents immediately. Block his access to the rest of the apartment with a baby gate, and slowly expand his access as he becomes house-trained. Confining him to surfaces with tile or linoleum floors also makes cleaning up accidents easier.
We want your dog to go potty prior to his walk for a few reasons. There will be times in life when you don’t have the time or inclination to take your dog for a big walk, like when you’re rushing to get to work or it’s cold and rainy outside. Also, we don’t want your puppy to learn that the longer he holds it, the longer his walk will be. If he thinks his nice, fun walks always end abruptly when he finally goes, he’ll hold it as long as he possibly can, which will lead to a housebreaking standoff. No fun. If your dog believes he has to relieve himself soon after getting to his potty area in order to take a walk, he’ll be motivated to get the job done in a hurry, which will make housebreaking him a whole lot easier.

In one study laboratory-bred Beagles were divided into three groups. Group A received an electric shock when the dogs touched the prey (a rabbit dummy fixed to a motion device). Group H received a shock when they did not obey a previously trained recall command during hunting. Dogs in group R received the electric shock arbitrarily, i.e. the shock was administered unpredictably and out of context. Group A did not show a significant rise in salivary cortisol levels, while group R and group H did show a significant rise. This led to the conclusion that animals which were able to clearly associate the electric stimulus with their action, i.e. touching the prey, and consequently were able to predict and control the stressor, did not show considerable or persistent stress indicators, while animals that were not able to control the situation to avoid the shock did show significant stress.[62]
