Until your puppy is house trained, he cannot have the full range of the house. He should be supervised at all time. This means that he is either tethered to you by a leash or is confined in the room with you. You want to have fast access to your dog or puppy so that you can spot your dog starting to potty and interrupt him. Remember, if you did not see the accident happen, you CANNOT do anything about it except clean it up.
Interrupt accidents. If you catch your puppy in the act of urinating or defecating indoors, make a sudden noise such as a clap, and say the word “no.” Then, quickly lead the dog outside.[2]

When housetraining a new dog (puppy or adult) I make sure I know what my dog considers “platinum level rewards.” Housetraining is a big deal, and it requires that we acknowledge our dog’s success with a fitting outcome for his or her achievement. High-value food rewards should be stored on a shelf or table by the door so you can grab them on the way out with your dog. And the rewards of praise and play should be abundantly part of the potty party that celebrates your dog’s success at pottying in the proper place.

The best way for humans to recreate what the mother dog does is to create a schedule for our puppies, with regular, set times for training, feeding, bathroom breaks, and sleep. Keep in mind, too, that the most common times for a puppy to have to go are right after sleeping, eating, and playing.

Now that you’ve established a routine around bathroom breaks, you can start to increase the time between your puppy’s outdoor visits. A good general rule of thumb to determine how often your dog needs to go outside is that a puppy can “hold it” for about as many hours as he is months old, plus one. That means, for example, that if your dog is three months old, he should be able to “hold it” for up to four hours. Remember, though, that he will still need a potty break shortly after his meals as well as first thing in the morning.
Older dogs can hold on for longer, so take him out after every meal, after waking, at bedtime, and every 1-2 hours when he’s awake. When inside, do not let the dog out of your sight, and at the first sign of sniffing to locate a toilet spot, take him outside.

When it comes to training, you must define what is keeping your dog from picking up what you are teaching; defining if your dog has what problems or why problems can alleviate frustration. Professor Donaldson explains how to motivate a dog and adjust your rate of reinforcement for these and a number of other common obstacles that may stand in his way. She also provides tips for transitioning out of training mode and into integrating what your dog has learned into common behaviors. x

To help make sure you’re ready, here’s a checklist to cross off and make sure you have everything prepared. Have you:

  6. Make sure that there are no health problems that are causing or contributing to your dog’s inappropriate elimination behavior. Before moving ahead with a house training plan, provide your vet with fecal and urine samples from your dog to rule out physical causes for the behavior (contributing factors may include, but are not limited to, parasites, urinary tract infections, and spay incontinence).

After your puppy has given you 20 or 30 seconds of attention, give him the toy. Play with him a bit, then relax and try walking again. Gradually increase the time you walk together during your training sessions, then gradually stop using the toy. Eventually your dog will walk happily at your side whenever he’s on his leash.

  8. The younger puppies are, the more frequently they have to relieve themselves. Housetraining takes work, but a little training trouble now will save you a lot of cleaning trouble later.

Use a cleaning product that contains live bacteria or enzymes that break down the mess, rather than masking it with another fragrance.

Watch for the typical signs that your puppy needs to go to the toilet – these may include sniffing the floor, circling, looking restless or going into a room they have previously toileted in. Take your puppy immediately to your chosen place in the garden and wait patiently until they have done their business and praise gently.

You must be patient. Regardless of whether you have a puppy or have recently adopted an adult, the dog will not automatically understand the routine in your house or know where the door is. It is up to you to train your dog.

When training your dog, it crucial to reward good behavior when it happens. If there is a lag between when the good behavior is exhibited and the treat or praise, your dog may not know what he is getting a treat for. Look for healthy treats as you will be feeding small treats frequently when in training mode.
Plus, your puppy may be tempted to repeat the act if the carpet retains some of his scent. To remove both pet stains and odors, you need Rocco & Roxie’s Professional Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator .
