Motivational training has its roots in captive animal training, where compulsion and corrections are both difficult and dangerous, and ignoring bad behavior is not problematic as the animal lives under controlled conditions. As a dog training strategy, purely positive training is feasible, but difficult, as it requires time and patience to control the rewards the dog receives for behavior. Some activities such as jumping up or chasing squirrels are intrinsically rewarding, the activity is its own reward, and with some activities the environment may provide reinforcement such as when the response from dog next door encourages barking.

You want your dog to be the proudest creature on earth every time he pees or poops outside. Yes it seems silly after a while, and maybe even a little creepy if your dog stares at you while doing their business – but rest assured, you’re getting the message across.
First of all, if like me you use a crate, you simply cannot leave your puppy in the crate for many hours. They’ll be forced to potty in there after a very uncomfortable time trying to hold it for as long as they possibly can.
Hobby & Leisure Intact males may be marking, in which case neutering can help significantly (not to mention the added health benefits of neutering).
Because your domesticated dog will treat their crate just as a wild dog would treat their den, he will not want to soil their sleeping space. Therefore, you can be sure that, if at all possible, your dog will not have an accident in their crate, so when you let them out of their crate to go outside, he will naturally seize that opportunity to relieve themself. While there are other methods of house training your puppy, this is a very instinctual transition, requiring mainly that you take your puppy out of their crate at reasonable intervals to use the restroom. This way, your puppy will pretty easily, and perceptively, pick up that he is expected to do their business outside, not in.

Kidney Care Copyright © 2018 I have a 9 or 10 week puppy (a mutt) similar to a long haired dash hound that came from a couple giving away a litter of puppies. The puppies have been outside and not handled by the previous owners much so she cowers when approached by humans. She is getting better about being approached and handled but we are afraid to scold her much as we do not want to make her more afraid. I also have a 6 year old shitzu. My husband and I both work. We have a doggie door which the shitzu is accoustomed to using to obtain outdoor access to eliminate. The new puppy has been shown the doggy door, can and does use it to get outsinde but continues to eliminate inside. I have a 10ft x 20ft vinyl tile floor room that door is in and have tried to gate that room to allow indoor relief from the Texas heat and limit access to the remainder of the house, but the puppy clibs the gate, or just urinates inside anyway. K have placed pittle pads in the gated room in the areas I have had to clean up urine and poop but she refuses to go on the pads, instead going about 1 foot away from the pad to eliminate. We are exasperated. Please advise.

First, ask your dog to “Sit.” How to Teach a Dog Not to Kill a Chicken 11 “Sit.” Again, this is an easy behavior to capture. Most puppies offer sits frequently. It’s something you can begin capturing on the first day. It’s also a great default behavior for your pup. The first behavior your pup learns often becomes the “go-to” behavior whenever the pup is unsure in a training session. A sit makes a great default behavior and gives the pup a rewardable alternative to jumping up for attention.

Don’t allow your puppy freedom outside of his room or pen unless you know absolutely for sure that his bladder and bowels are completely empty. When you do let him out, don’t let him out of your sight. It is a good idea to have him on leash when he is exploring your home. He can’t get into trouble if you are attached to the other end of the leash. Never, ever tie the puppy’s leash to something and leave the puppy unattended.
GET SOCIALIZATION AND Eventually, you can leave out the “sit” cue, and the puppy will jump once or twice, realize you’re ignoring him, and then sit in order to get your attention.
