Strictly following the model set out in the Koehler Method of Dog Training, some 50 years later, the Koehler method continues to be taught in both class and private training formats. The method is based in the philosophy that a dog acts on its right to choose its actions. Koehler explained that a dog’s learned behavior is an act of choice based on its own learning experience. When those choices are influenced by the expectation of reward, the behavior will most likely be repeated, and when those choices are influenced by the anticipation of punishment, they will most likely cease. Once the dog has learned that its choices result in comfort or discomfort it can be taught to make the correct decisions. Action→Memory→Desire encapsulates the learning pattern used by the method; the dog acts, remembers the consequences, and forms the desire to repeat or avoid those consequences. Adherents believe that once the behavior has been correctly taught, it should be performed, thus making any correction, fair, reasonable, and expected.[57] While the model has been used consistently since 1962, some of the punishment procedures described in the book are now not considered necessary, humane, or appropriate by many trainers.[23]

Trainers can demonstrate techniques and help guide you through the steps in training. They can help advise you on puppy training problems, and can help you advance your training to exercises that are more difficult. The puppy will be learning in a group situation, with some real life distractions. And, considering human nature, the pet owner who takes his or her dog to a puppy class will be forced to practice (do their homework) throughout the week if they do not want to fall behind by the next class. Finally, a training class is a good place to meet and talk to other new puppy owners and see how all puppies behave.

Your chain must not be in an area where your dog can hang himself or get tangled and choke. Be sure that when your dog’s chained, he can’t climb over a fence or fall down stairs or over a steep embankment. Be sure there are no trees, posts or pieces of outdoor furniture he can get tangled up in. Your dog’s outdoor chain must never be attached to a choke collar or a pinch collar. Check to see that his collar isn’t so loose that he might be able to slip out of it and run away. Even if you follow all of these safety rules, your dog should never be left unattended on his chain for a long period of time. Check on him frequently. You might even want to set a timer to remind you to check on him if you’re busy doing something else and might forget he’s out there.

Puppies have not yet developed bowel and bladder control, so they can’t ‘hold it’ as long as adult dogs.

While a plastic crate would likely require you to continually upgrade as your pup grows, newer wire, metal cages are customizable with an included, movable divider, so the larger space you buy for them as a pup will also fit them as an adult.

After you bring home a new puppy, it can feel like you’ve lost all freedom. A crate or ex-pen is the ticket to getting some of that freedom back. Confining your puppy in a safe, happy place when you cannot watch her is a built-in solution to many behavior challenges. It prevents problems (chewed up shoes or furniture, house soiling) before they happen.

Hydrobathing Try to keep the dogs with you — or crated. I suggest a tether (hook the dog’s leash to your belt), so you can start to notice the precursor signals that he’s about to start to go to the bathroom. Also a really tight and frequent “outside” schedule will help as well. Put the food bowl down for 15 minutes at mealtime, then remove it until the next feeding. Take the pup(s) out 15 minutes after feeding them, after they wake up from a nap, right after a vigorous exercise session, etc. And absolutely zero house freedom. Always on a tether (or crated). Good luck, this takes patience, consistency, and a frequent bathroom schedule.

A dog’s nose is about one million times stronger than ours. And this is a good to have in mind as they prefer to go to the same spots to relieve themselves. This will help your training – or spoil it. So to help you and your puppy choose a specific spot to relieve themselves, the scent will remind them to pee or poop right there.

If the pup should growl or indicate any defensiveness, he must be told “NO”, then grabbed by his middle, and pulled backward away from the dish. Roll the pup onto his back and scold him. When he subsides, release him, and allow him to resume eating. Repeat if he growls again. This works well with most young pups.

Without a doubt, my new pup has learned to go outside to potty and I am thrilled that she has learned to use the dog door. When nature calls she hops through and out. There hasn’t been an accident in weeks and I’m off the hook as door attendant. But is my new puppy fully housetrained? The answer is…no!

We have 2 Italian Greyhounds (12 weeks old). Instead of crate training, we have a closed in terrace that is their “crate area”. We have built them a large grass box for potty, but they don’t use it a lot. I’m home with them most of the time, so I am able to correct their mistakes, but night time or if we are out of the house, they don’t use it. What would be the best way to get them going in the correct spot at the times they aren’t being supervised?

The best way for humans to recreate what the mother dog does is to create a schedule for our puppies, with regular, set times for training, feeding, bathroom breaks, and sleep. Keep in mind, too, that the most common times for a puppy to have to go are right after sleeping, eating, and playing.
