As the proud guardian of both a brand new Aussie puppy and a “sudden urge” Greyhound senior, I am grateful for my dog door. My dogs go in and out at will, never needing to call on me to use my opposable thumb to turn the handle to open that door. At my house, there’s no need to find the attendant to get the restroom key; the bathroom door is always unlocked. My dogs go out, my dogs come in. There’s nary a potty accident or worry.

Wow! What an outline! Bravo for clearing up so many questions I had. No other website really elaborated like you have on a lot of the unknowns when house training a puppy – specifically when your dog gets to have some free time. Thank you!! Your outline & instructions worked out so well. I am following the confinement and crating methods inside and using a 4 foot tether outside to control/encourage the peeps & poops. We are on day two and she’s getting the message!!! After her love and rewards Charly enjoys her supervised free time in the house and her free runs in the back yard.
Puppies need time to developed a “den” instinct to cause them to want to ‘hold it’ and not soil the den, i.e., your entire house. In their litter, puppies just go whenever and wherever they happen to be! Successful house training depends upon your diligent supervision so you can be there to show your pup where to eliminate.

Make sure that you reinforce the heck out the behavior you like. If you provide a consequence that is reinforcing to your dog, the behavior will be offered more frequently. And, if you click when he finishes eliminating, you can eventually put the elimination behavior on cue!

This is the biggest mistake and biggest ‘punishment’ that you can do to your puppy. If you want to think about this situation from a human point of view, think about a child; it would be wrong not to teach our kids anything until they are old enough for school, right? This is because an adult dog will “tell off” a puppy but not attack him. Submission will take the form of a sideways crouch near to the ground, his tail held low but wagging away. He may also try to lick the face of the dominant dog or human. He may even roll on his back.

4. Shower him with praise when he does a good job. Change the mat often, but leave a little spot of dried urine there. The scent of the urine will help your dog remember that the mat is the place to go to the bathroom. Remove feces right away, but leave a sheet of newspaper or a small bit of padding with urine on the clean mat so your dog will naturally know where to go.

You’re there not only to ensure that he actually goes, you’re also there to reward your puppy with a treat for going in the proper spot. Wait until your puppy finishes eliminating and immediately give him a tasty reward for a job well done. If you wait until you get back in the house, your puppy won’t make the connection between his elimination and the reward.

  1. Puppies need to toilet much more frequently than adult dogs. They have small bladders and no instinct to ‘hold on’. Older dogs usually toilet after waking up, 10-20 minutes after eating, drinking and playing and sometimes after being outside.  Don’t assume that your dog will know to toilet while outside unless they have learned to do so.

Make sure you stay with them at their bathroom spot: If you have them on leash, then of course you will be. But if you don’t have them on leash, make sure you stay with them because the separation will just make your puppy anxious to get back with you and they will not potty.

Make potty time a relaxing and rewarding event for your puppy to look forward to. To encourage your dog to patiently hold and wait until you allow them to go they must first enjoy it.
Although dogs can be transitioned away from them, it makes the house-training process more complicated. I often see canines who are trained to go on pads as puppies, but they’re not allowed to do so as adults, which only leads to confusion and accidents in the home.
I really wanted to buy a puppy so I can have a new buddy at home but we all know that it’s also a big responsibility. You have to take care of it like your own child. Only punish a behavior if you catch your puppy in the act. A bad puppy that has chewed through the screen door won’t understand that he is being punished for this when you reprimand him ten minutes later.

As your dog enjoys continued success at pottying outdoors appropriately and not pottying indoors, you can increase the size of the area where he is confined when not being supervised. Don’t go too far, giving him whole-house freedom after he hasn’t had an accident for a few days. Instead, use an exercise pen to expand his confinement area by, say, 50 to 100 square feet more per week of success.

Certain dogs and certain breeds seem to understand from a very young age to do their business outside. Other dogs just don’t get it initially, and take longer to housetrain. But there is no breed or type of dog that absolutely cannot be housetrained. It just takes certain breeds and sometimes certain puppies with slower cognitive development a bit longer to understand the ground rules of housetraining.
Puppies that break the “sit-stay” before you’ve given the release word get no treats. Say something like, “whoops, you blew it!” and turn your back, cutting off any hope of treat/rewards for at least ten seconds or so. Your puppy will soon make the connection that holding the “sit-stay” gets him more yummy treats, and the yummies disappear if he moves.

  8. You do this by using a cue word and walking them on leash to their potty spot, not allowing them to do anything else and if they do not potty, taking them back inside and trying again in a few minutes.

And be sure not to punish your puppy for an accident or do anything to create a negative association with her bodily functions. Stay calm and assertive and quietly remove the puppy to the place where you want him to go.
If you use the wrong teaching method, your puppy will begin making decisions about how he wants YOU to fit into HIS life. That’s a recipe for conflict and behavior problems.

Sometimes your dog may bark or whine while in the crate or pen. Or if he is confined inside a room, he may scratch, whine, or bark at the door. Dogs that don’t give you any verbal cues need to be observed carefully, because the only sign you may get is the sniffing and circling routine.
