puppy training tricks | how to train your puppy to walk on a leash

Once he’s focused on you and the reward, say “Name, come!” Then turn around and RUN in the opposite direction. This uses his instinctive urge for social play. Puppies can rarely resist the urge to chase.
Remove their water bowl two hours before going to bed. This will help your puppy sleep longer at night without needing to go outside to pee. And, you’ll sleep longer and better, too. Most puppies can sleep for about seven hours without having to relieve themselves if you get the conditions right. That sounds good, right?
Do not plead for obedience. Discipline does not have to be harsh physical punishment.
I had another thought that I shared with Amber’s mom: When a fully housetrained dog starts urinating and/or defecating in the house, one must get thee and thine dog to a veterinarian to rule out a medical cause! Urinary tract infections are a very common reason that a formerly housetrained dog might start urinating in the house; the painful condition causes an urgency that few dogs can resist.
Décor, Gravel & Substrate A simple checklist: Basic manners and obedience like sit, come when called, polite leash walking, etc.

It’s normal for a young puppy to be a little ‘input-output’ machine. Since they are growing and developing rapidly at this stage, they eat more food, burn up more energy and seem to need to eliminate constantly! Puppies have not yet developed bowel and bladder control, so they can’t ‘hold it’ as long as adult dogs.

5/15/18 Engineering the Perfect Wave One of the easiest ways to prevent accidents is learning to recognize when your puppy needs to go out. Most puppies will sniff the ground when they’re getting ready to potty, but there are many other more signals that happen prior to sniffing. Puppies that pace, seem distracted and walk away from play are subtly signaling that they have to go out. If your puppy tries to sneak out of the room, take a potty break right away.

We have trained our many dogs with a large “jingle bell” like you see around Christmas. We attach it with a string to the door we want the dog to use. Every time we let out the dog, we touch the dogs nose to it so it rings and then let the dog out. It has worked successfully for us and in a short time our dogs have learned to ring it. After a while we take it down (Our cat also likes to play with it.) The bell and lots a praise has worked well for us. You need to have a fast response when they first catch on. Waiting is NOT an option at first. LOL

Teach your dog to come: This is the ideal time to teach your puppy to come to you. Young puppies want to be close to you, and the hardest part will be to get them to stay away from you so that you can call them to repeat this command again. If you have two people training the new puppy, have them call her name and “come”, and then when she runs to the new person she is given a treat. Just repeat this a few times, and if the puppy starts running to the second person even without being called start working on something else. Puppies figure this out really fast, so DO NOT give her a treat if she is running to the new person even without being called.
Place cozy blankets and favorite toys inside the crate with the door wide open and allow your puppy to explore it on their own. If they don’t enter the crate, toss in a few treats to encourage further exploration.

If you do go your suggested route, and toilet train her religiously at all other times, you will still find success, it will likely just take longer than it might have done, with potential for more ‘inside mistakes’ as she will have learnt toileting inside is sometimes acceptable…and relieves her / fulfils a need, which is in itself rewarding.

To help your dog know when barking is acceptable, you simply need to teach him that he may bark until he is told to stop. “Stop barking” should be considered as a command for obedience rather than a telling off.
Help him relax when he comes home. When your puppy gets home, give him a warm hot water bottle and put a ticking clock near his sleeping area. This imitates the heat and heartbeat of his litter mates and will soothe him in his new environment. This may be even more important for a new dog from a busy, loud shelter who’s had a rough time early on. Whatever you can do to help him get comfortable in his new home will be good for both of you.

Crate training is not the same as training your dog to go to the bathroom outside, so ideally the crate should be just big enough for your dog to stand up, lie down, and turn around in. If your dog learns that it’s okay to go potty on his bed, your dog will begin to feel it’s okay to go anywhere else in the house too.

In busy families I recommend setting an alarm on your watch or phone to remind you to take your puppy out 30 minutes or so after the last time.
I just rescued my 9-11 week old black lab. My friend found her in a box with her litter and she was the last one. She barkes really loud when i try to confine her to a potty place but she wont go if shes confined. she hasnt had her shots yet and i dont want to take any chances with getting her sick. i have an app scheduled tomorrow but i would bennefit from some assistance for potty training because i rent a house and shes had so many accidents already.

What are the best ways of potty training a puppy in an apartment?
Any reaction after the fact is unproductive, and harsh reactions are never appropriate. Work harder moving forward.
Clap your hands if you catch your dog relieving himself indoors, and immediately carry him outside or to the pee pad. Give him lots of praise and a treat when he finishes outside, even if he emptied half his bladder in your kitchen 30 seconds earlier. If you find an accident after it’s already occurred, you’re too late. Your dog will make no connection between his earlier behavior and your reaction several minutes or hours later. Clean it up, and make a conscious effort to watch him more closely.

Housetraining and chewtoy-training will be quick and easy if you adhere to the puppy confinement plan above, which prevents the puppy from making mistakes and prompts the puppy to teach herself household etiquette. If you vary from the program, you will likely experience problems. Unless you enjoy problems, you must reprimand yourself for any mistakes you allow your puppy to make.

Toilet training should start as soon as your puppy gets home. Puppies urinate frequently and success in housetraining depends on anticipating their needs – they should be given the opportunity to relieve themselves as often as you can. You can usually tell when a puppy ‘wants to go’ because he or she will look around anxiously, walk in circles and start sniffing in suitable corners looking for a place. That’s your cue to whisk your pet outside.

  10. How to Crate Train Your Dog
If your puppy just can’t seem to get the hang of potty training at this point and continuously has accidents in the house, you may consider taking him to a veterinarian to rule out any medical conditions. It’s possible that he has a physical issue that’s impeding his ability to “hold it,” in which case you would want to get him help for the condition as soon as possible.

Nearly 10 years ago, my family turned to Gigi for help with our fearful border collie, Lilly. Unlike other trainers who pretty much gave up on us, Gigi helped us teach Lilly the skills she needed for a happy life. We adopted a new border collie puppy, Clover, in September 2014. Just four days after her arrival home, Clover attended her first puppy class with Gigi. We’re thrilled to have Gigi as part of our puppy’s life. For us, it’s well worth the drive from Golden to take classes with Gigi each week.

Now it’s night time put her in there after taking her out to potty and she is freaking out. I don’t want to let her out becuase she’s whining and I don’t want her to think that gets her out but she simply won’t stop. What can I do to help get her to stop? Or calm down??

Sometimes, people allow their puppy to run free when outside, and sometimes people put their puppy outside and come straight back in themselves leaving their puppy outside alone making their puppy pine to come back in with their family. Both these things can make a puppy forget what they’re outside for. Make sure you’re not making either of these mistakes.

    Bea says
Reassert your authority over your puppy. Your puppy will respect you more and respond to your discipline if you take clear control over him. To do this, give your commands in a stern tone of voice. You may also want to make your dog follow commands outside of training sessions. For example, make your puppy sit and wait briefly before setting down his food dish.
