The most common form of housebreaking is teaching your dog to hold it when he’s in the house and wait until he goes outside to go potty – either on a walk, out in the yard, or on an enclosed patio or balcony. This type of training works for owners who are able to arrange their schedules to get home in time to be sure their dog has a reasonable number of opportunities to relieve himself outside during the course of the day, or those who are willing to recruit or hire someone to take him outside if they’re not able to.

Be Patient: Don’t punish your puppy when they pee or poop inside. Amber was a darling Golden Retriever pup who had graduated from my Puppy Kindergarten with honors. She had a strong foundation in socialization and training, which had resulted in her having a happy and positive worldview and good puppy manners. Most importantly, Amber had mastered housetraining. At the time of her graduation, her parents proudly noted that Amber had not pottied in the house in weeks, and when she had to go, she let her parents know by whining at the door.

Dogs learn by association, so if your puppy does something good, reward him. Then the action is much more likely to be repeated. But the reward must be linked to the action, so he must be rewarded quickly, within a second or two. The reward itself can be a few kibbles of puppy food or praise, or both.

There is no sense in punishing a dog or puppy after the fact. If you catch a dog him in the act of eliminating in the house, make an “oops!” sound, using a surprised facial expression. This is often enough to interrupt a dog mid-stream, at which point you can quickly take him to his potty spot, allow him to finish, and reinforce appropriate elimination in the correct spot. (Then go grab your gallon of Nature’s Miracle and make sure you clean that spot extra thoroughly!)

House Training Behavioral Issues In most cases, though, puppies don’t know what the command means. It’s important to explain the term in language your puppy understands. One of the best ways to interact with your dog and to get him or her to pay attention to you is to teach look or watch me command. This isn’t necessarily a trick, rather it’s a way to capture your dog’s full attention before you begin training. To do this, simply decide which words you will use and be consistent (i.e. “look” or “watch me”). Before you begin teaching your dog anything else, say “look,” and offer a treat when she responds. When you have her full attention, move onto the training.

Prior to the 1980s, Karen Pryor was a marine-mammal trainer who used Skinner’s operant principles to teach dolphins and develop marine-mammal shows. In 1984, she published her book, Don’t Shoot the Dog: The New Art of Teaching and Training, an explanation of operant-conditioning procedures written for the general public.[23] In the book Pryor explains why punishment as a way to get people to change often fails, and describes specific positive methods for changing the behaviour of husbands, children and pets.[33] Pryor’s dog training materials and seminars showed how operant procedures can be used to provide training based on positive reinforcement of good behavior.[23] Pryor and Gary Wilkes introduced clicker training to dog trainers with a series of seminars in 1992 and 1993. Wilkes used aversives as well as rewards, and the philosophical differences soon ended the partnership.[34]
