If you focus on rewards and adding positively to your pup’s new life experience, the two of you will bond more quickly. The more you teach her, the more you will see how smart she is and what she’s capable of. The more reinforcement your puppy receives from you in training sessions, the more creative and confident she becomes.
Tags Don’t make the mistake of assuming if she doesn’t relieve herself when you take her out the first time that she doesn’t need to go. Sure she does — especially first thing in the morning. She should either be in her crate or outside in her potty spot until she has done her morning business.

Some people recommend to stay out there for 10, 15, 20 minutes, whatever it takes until they go, then praise profusely when they do. Although this advice may be sound, personally I’d rather not.

Wonders of the National Parks: A Geology of North America Hello, I have a 10 week old chocolate lab named Moose. I had to return back to work full time so I have created a 6’x6’ space for Moose that has his crate, puppy pads as well as space to play and stretch. I get Moose up at 5:00am to use the bathroom and eat breakfast and then I leave for work around 5:45am. I’ve arranged for my father who doesn’t work to come by and let Moose out at 9:00am, 11:30am and eat lunch, and again at 2:30pm. Then I get home at 5:00pm and he is out the rest of the afternoon and eats dinner. However during the day he is peeing on the puppy pad and then playing in it so everyday I get home I have to completely clean him and the pen area. Any suggestions on how to get him to stop playing with the puppy pads or do I just need to wait this out and until he gets more control of his bladder and waits to go outside??? Thanks for any advice.

Jenny E | Palatine, Illinois As a rough guideline, you can realistically expect your dog to hold his bladder based on his monthly age. For instance, a pup that is three months old may be able to hold his bladder for about three hours.
• An exercise pen that your puppy cannot jump out of. Put the exercise pen in a central location where you spend most of your time at home. You may want to put a tarp down first then set the pen on top of it.
If your dog has gone potty in his spot and you’re out on his walk, it’s fine if you want to give him a few more pit stops to see if he wants to potty some more. Some dogs will need to go after they exercise, so allow your puppy a quick trip to his potty spot right before going back inside, as well.
But I’ve given it a 3 because no matter how good your intentions are, no matter how mindful you are of the task of supervision, you will let your guard down and your puppy will be able to sneak off to make mistakes.

You may only need to take an adult dog outside very 2 hours, while a puppy needs to be taken outside every hour to avoid mistakes. Some early warning signs of a need to urinate or defecate are circling and sniffing the ground. It is much easier to pick up when your dog needs to toilet if you are watching closely or your dog is on a lead with you at all times.
